FIRST NIGHT, FIRST HAND

I’m a little late with this post, but I feel it’s one of those better late then never situations. Mainly because I wanted to give a great big Thank You to Carol Clark of Ecologic for getting this gig together. Durango was long over due for this sort of all ages entertainment on New Year’s. Forget the fact that your eyelashes froze to your face that night, and forget that we had recently received boat loads of snow which made set up that much more fun- it was a great event. And it’s only going to get better.

HONEYSUCKLE

Pantone has released its Color of the Year- For 2011 the color to be and see every where is… honeysuckle. Or pink. Cheery. Optimistic. And who doesn’t feel happy around pink?

As my daughters and I contemplated what color to paint their little vintage bathroom, I brought pink to the party. They loved the idea. Now we’re in beautiful azalea pink towels and a petal pink wall- keeping with the flower theme. And you know, it’s great. You look good in the morning when pink surrounds you.

In the spirit of renewed optimism, I recommend you go out and pink yourself somehow. You know you want to.

FIRST NIGHT IN DURANGO

First Night Durango

Having just completed the graphic system for First Night Durango, an EcoLogic Event – I have to say I’m particularly excited about it. Both the system and the event. Durango has been in need of an all ages New Year’s event for some time. This one has something for everyone.

For the entire family, go downtown around 8:00 and jump into the festivities. It’s an all ages celebration, combining art, music, food, activities and kick booty warming stations. Hot chocolate for kids, slightly harder offerings for parents.

And if you are kid free and looking to partake in an adult event, there will also be a Sparkling Wine and Cupcake tasting set up in an enormous tent, heated and decorated lounge style. Music, entertainment and plenty of fun are all part of this private event. Tickets are $50 which I think is a great deal for an entire evening of swanky entertainment.

CYCLING IN HEELS

The seasons are turning once more in beautiful southwest Colorado. Golden leaves, snow capped peaks, a crystal clean feel to the air. You’ve all seen the pictures. It looks just like that. It’s really just amazing. Yet, with this new nip in the air comes the chilly mornings, which always brings a new level of preparation to my bike commute — if we can truly call it a commute. I live minutes from my office. However, in my defense, I still have to prepare for cycling. You can freeze your knee caps off in under 4 blocks.

I recently read an article in the Financial Times on what the stylish female cyclists wears. Quaint and fun, but really? Who can afford, an albeit cool looking, wool tweed cape with glow in the dark fibers woven through it— at $400? I can see myself getting the edge of the cape caught in my cup holder and causing yet another self-inflicted and spectacular crash at the 4-way. Sour grapes. What the article didn’t cover, I noticed, was foot wear.

Not one to completely give up my ridiculous desire for heels completely, I have honed my shopping prowess into a new level of awareness. I am the self proclaimed expert on biking in heels. It can be done, with a measure of grace and finesse which does include getting on and getting off your bike. This year in particular has brought a flurry of new styles, bordering between a clog and a heel which has made me giddy with joy. What I have discovered is that its all about size and, well, sole. Too thin and spiky and you can pop through your pedal like a lawn aerator if you’re not careful. Too smooth a surface, you slide off and give yourself a nasty bruise on the calf. I have resoled many a shoe with Vibram to gain a little extra in the way of grip. It also helps for walking on ice. But finding a heel with enough girth, slightly chunky without going full 90′s is tough. Boot heels are easier and I sport plenty of Frye’s, but if you are looking for something a little more delicate, I recommend you check out these brands. They are a little retro, slightly funky but really quite fantastic. You’ll see me happily pedaling in them until there is too much snow to plow through and I have to give in to BogBootdom.

And girls, hold your ground. Since you do ride, you likely travel in groups with the bike kulture scene. Either swinging to full on roadie or single speeder to urban hip fixie. All the same in the grand scheme. You will have to defend your slightly poor decision to bike in heels to many who suddenly have something to say about your fashion sense. Be strong!

YOU WANT FRIES WITH THAT?

There’s this bad feeling that has been creeping up on me this past year. At first I couldn’t put my finger on it, but in the last week its been made crystal clear.

My profession has undergone a major transformation. It has gone from a profession that was thoughtful and careful of its steps, ensuring that work produced was effective and appropriate to meet the customer’s target audience. A craft if you will. A service that made smart decisions regarding the branding of a product or customers needs. It has gone from all that to a commodity, homogenized to the point of an instant gratification based, a la carte service for the all new price of less than you ever made as a babysitter in high school. While the big guns are still there going strong, many of the independents are signing up left and right for the online design express. Have you seen these sites? Customers can offer a price for a logo and as many designers as want to can submit until at the end of a time frame, the customers gets to pick a “winner.” Usually for the going rate of $200 to $350.

I know I sound like I’m whining. It’s because I am. Because what I don’t understand, is that when and if this big recession is over, how do we reclaim our craft? How do we go back to those customers that have adjusted to the new identity system rate of $200 to a more reasonable price that allows the designer to explore on your behalf and truly develop an identity or message that is meaningful? Or do we? Do we rather continue to knock out logos or ad campaigns like a copy machine and who cares if it works for your product or service. Its a logo for crying out loud and you got it cheap.

It makes me sad that so much of what is wonderful and creative, is becoming a commodity. Art, design, food, jobs, schools- you name it. The all American apple pie is now reduced to a McFruit Pie- rest assured that it will be the same wherever you go- consistently mediocre at best.

So for those of you out there that get it — those that understand that design is all around us and you can’t experience one item that hasn’t been touched by a designer — whether its a child’s board game, a community plan or a jet — who understand design is an integral part of our lives — cheers to you! Keep it real for all of us.

DURANGO FALL BLAZE 2010

Wow summer has already come and practically gone— we start school this Monday. By we, I mean all of us with kids that live by the school calendar. It’s a time for regaining a semblance of a schedule, knowing where our kids are, mostly, and looking forward to some beautiful fall weather riding. Personally, I embraced the sauna like riding conditions thrown at me this summer. So you lose an extra five pounds in water weight each ride. Big deal. Bring it on.

Nevertheless, fall is coming quickly, and I’m not being a pessimist- just a realist. It just always seems to come quicker than spring. But we get the Fall Blaze. A beautiful tour around Durango at the peak of fall color. If you are inclined to ride a bike on the road, I highly recommend looking at this group tour. Its run by great people and has a most festive tone.

HOW DESIGN CONFERENCE- IT’S A WRAP

Starting with Tuesday morning, my brain went into over drive. We got the most succinct run down of the history of branding by Debbie Millman. The premise that successful brands today represent the promise of a new community or family. In short, there are more people living solo today than ever before which goes against the human nature of needing family or a tribe. Through social media, humans have found a new way to connect and create family. Brands that deliver the promise of this connection will ultimately be the successful ones. I felt a little depressed with this, but somehow it explained why I don’t have the drive to jump into social media on a personal level with the exception of wanting to police my daughter’s Face Book page… I get it, but it makes me sad. It makes me want to do all I can as a designer to help people make more human connections in person.

We rolled into a fabulous talk given by Sam Harrison on how  to sell your ideas. We’ve all been there and all left a pitch thinking, “they don’t get it.” – Sam gave us a few tricks to help smooth the process out. I wonder if he has ever pitched to a group that insists on 100% consensus? We picked up his book idea selling to sleep on and hopefully absorb it through osmosis.

At that point we jumped over to a quick session on specializing your firm. This is worth an entire blog as I continue to be unsure of our direction here.

And to top it all off we danced our butts off to the tunes of The Jakarta Band. It was a white party, but we didn’t get the memo until we were already in Denver so had to come up short with white outfits. Wonder if my legs would have sufficed? More community. More connection.

The last sad but sweet day created more internal questions and more resolve.

Sum it up- HOW was amazing and I highly recommend it to any designer no matter how big or small.

MONDAY AT THE HOW CONFERENCE

Today was one of those great big overwhelming fabulous days. All in one day I heard about collecting what motivates you- as in it might be something you use later. Which is really funny, because this is something I have had to fight in myself all my life- not to be a pack rat and I feel like I’ve done a pretty darn good job with that. Here I find out that all that crap was actually a good thing. On a side note- I’m really good at finding stuff when I need it. Gail Anderson was a hoot and reminded me of a very good friend which made me smile more while I was watching her.

I learned that it’s OK to be a kick ass swaggering female. I am good at what I do, which is really great design and I’m psyched to be doing it. Erin Sarpa and I should have coffee sometime. I like other kick ass women too.

I learned that when I come back again in another life I want to be Leatrice Eiseman. She gets to travel the world looking for inspiration and new trend with color for Pantone. She is the person along with a few others, that tell the WWD what’s in for the coming seasons regarding color. The Pantone color of 2010- Turquoise. I had my turquoise bag 2 years ago! I was feeling pretty smug about this fact. Kidding aside, I heard a lot of what I felt, which seems to be a continuing thread at this conference for me. Confirmation is a beautiful thing.

After the mellow fashion vibe from Leatrice, we found the complete polar opposite with Mike Perry.  He had a stint with Urban Outfitters and I get the feeling he’s still wondering what hit him. He’s a kook and eclectic and just plain funky, but again, its the theme. He is authentic. Gotta love that.

After a day of all that yummyness, Cara and I had to call it a night with burgers and a bottle of wine and a really bad movie featuring one of my favorite bad asses- Benicio del Toro. We’ll forgive him the gory werewolf film.

HOW Design Conference keynote with Andy

Andy Stefanovich. WOW! This man was insane in a good way. He’s about authenticity and finding joy in what you do. He’s about being motivated and full of life. He’s about seeing what those serendipitous moments are about- they happen for a reason. Treat everyday as if you are going to a museum.

Andy was our keynote speaker tonight. He was amazing and inspiring. I wonder if he is like this all of the time? I have been accused of being a high strung poodle before- Andy makes me look like one of those mellow hound dogs. It was so fun to watch and be around.
