SO, THIS NUN WALKS INTO THE ROOM… MY HOW DESIGN CONFERENCE 2010

I kid you not, but I’ll come back to that.

Day 1: Sunday morning. Here we are in Denver for the HOW Design Conference, and it’s so wonderfully warm here. We made the decision to expand our minds and probably end up feeling bad about ourselves with all of the super talent mulling in the halls, but what the hec, why not. It’s been a while since I did any sort of “continuing education” thing for myself and Cara is always along for a party. So we came.

9:00 am we stroll into a large room at the Conference Center, you  know the voyeuristic big blue bear peeping in the window? That’s the place. So for our first session of the week, we’re in this large room with a dozen or so round tables covered in paper and all these really fun toys, tape, pencils, markers, play-doh, tape, I love tape, and stuff. In walks this nun. He is about six feet plus and he rocks his habit. He’s making sure we are all behaving. I love this class already. It makes me want to giggle out loud but the room is sort of quiet at the moment. We grab a seat, meet our new best friend Aldo who hails from Vancouver, one of the coolest cities ever, and well, start drawing on the table. I really can’t help myself. Cara is over there building cairns and stuff, and sporting an ear to ear grin. Did we really pay a gazillion dollars to play with stuff. You bet we did, because that is just about exactly what Stefan Mumaw and Wendy Lee tell us what to do.

Somewhere along the way, our over mature brains have lost the ability to bust loose. I’m thinking this evolutionary process might have skipped over Cara and me, but I get it. We all get to be so successful, snicker snicker, by basically self editing which is exactly how we can’t open our tiny little brains to find the really BIG ideas. Or at least find the kernel of a big idea and let someone else run with it. We’re all Creative Directors! The truths we have learned:

1. Creativity is a habit

2. Think before you think

This class is about running a better brain storm session forever now to be called a brain squall, getting people to participate and doing what you are supposed to do in a brain squall- start throwing down some good ideas.

What I have found out is that all they are saying is all the same stuff I think, preach, and talk about sometimes incessantly.  But it feels great to have yet another way to reform these thoughts and communicate it to our clients. Its great to have more people like us out there.

Oh and Stefan was wearing a nun’s suit because he feels better in a dress…

LOGO LOUNGE 6

We are soooo pleased and happy to announce that once more our work has been chosen for inclusion in Logo Lounge, an international publication of identity marks. My understanding is that there were over 34,000 logos entered for consideration this year. Logo Lounge Volume 6 will be available for purchase in February, 2011 through Rockport Publishers.

We’re doing our best to keep Durango on the map for graphic design! Our featured logo:

4th ANNUAL DURANGO WINE EXPERIENCE

It must be spring. For some of us, this glorious season of “warm weather at last” blows in with a really fantastically fun, strolling and tasting vino event. From May 6-8, you can taste, study, taste, chat, breathe and taste wines from around the globe. Did I mention taste? While my palette may not be up to snuff, this event keeps us in our comfort zone with its relaxed Durango style tude. It’s for everyone and anyone that likes to drink wine, and you might even learn a thing or two along the way.

Check it out. www.durangowine.com

ON DEVELOPING A LOGO

I am often asked what I think the purpose of a logo is or in other words, what is its job description. My answer is always the same. It’s an emotional trigger. It is the most boiled down essence of a business. It is often the first time you have any contact with that business. It’s there to either remind you of the experience you have had, whether your experience is limited to your ad in a phonebook or a full blown marketing campaign. It sets the tone for what more you will discover about this business. And by the way, there is a lot of good reading on the subject.

As importantly, I continue, is what the logo’s job IS NOT. It’s not there to give your potential customer the low down on everything you do. It’s not there to fulfill the role of a capabilities brochure or website or advertisement. In fact, the more you put into your logo, the more confusing the message often is. Keep it clean, keep it simple, keep it functional. It has to do a lot of work for your business.

A logo is the point of entry to the brand. I think someone famous by the name of Milton Glaser wrote that.

The Wonder of the Magic Mouse

It was like walking into a candy store for Apple Junkies! The bright lights, the high energy and all the newest gadgets to enhance my designing pleasure. Just before we were about to depart to devour some California Pizza Kitchen, my eyes fell upon the glorious Magic Mouse! Lo & Behold! The splendor of a sleek and seamless wireless mouse that works on virtually any surface. It responds to my touch to scroll horizontally, vertically and diagonally in any direction without the problematic scrolly ball. All this in one tiny hyper-responsive little device that fits so perfectly under the palm of my hand thanks to the technology of Blue Tooth and the Multi-Touch innovation of the iTouch. It’s the world’s first multi-touch mouse and Pool is the proud owner of 2 of them to make life that much more efficient.

LED KITCHEN GARDEN BY SONNY LIGHT

Get your bag of seed starter out- it’s time to plant! While it is the middle of January and Mother Nature has left us with no less than 8 inches of fresh snow outside last night, a lucky few us get to get our hands in the dirt. SonnyLight has received its first shipment of  LEDKitchenGarden and LEDGrowGarden grow lights. They look smart, are green, are easy to use and best of all inexpensive to run due to the LED technology. And, we are particularly fond of the logo.

I don’t know about you, but having a garden ripe tomato with fresh basil in the heart of winter borders on being scandalous. And I intend to jump whole heartedly into the veggie bacchanal!

IN2ITIVE OPENING

I’ve worked with Joan Levine Russell for more than a few years now, primarily while in her Russell Engineering & Land Planning hat. I’ve always known that she is first and foremost an incredibly talented artist, but haven’t had the opportunity to do much for the artist Joan until now. When she asked me to put together a postcard for her upcoming show with Sandra Butler – well, I jumped. I’ve been lucky enough to snoop around her studio and see the work in progress. It’s really fantastic.

You don’t want to miss this.

She will be showing her work along with Sandra Butler this February.

LOCAL FIRST HOLIDAY WRAPPING PAPER

I have always loved wrapping paper. It’s forever been one of those desires, albeit sort of latent and undisclosed, that I would like to design wrapping paper. Being a graphic designer, my infatuation with pattern and texture extends through the entire gamut- from wrapping paper, wall paper, fabric to patters found in nature. I love them all. So when Carol Clark of Local First asked me to design a local wrapping paper for the holidays I was truly fired up.

The mission: design a wrapping paper that represents your feelings about holidays in Durango.
The time frame: 2 days. Yikes! No problem.

Local First is an organization dedicated to keeping dollars in La Plata County. When it comes to buying local, many of us are pretty dedicated to making that happen, however there aren’t too many options for all the pretty wrappings and trim that simply must be a part of the gift. And that’s exactly what Carol sought to do. It’s fantastic.

There were six different designs printed this year and a list of where they can be purchased can be found online at www.localfirst.org

What’s next? I’m already discussing making origami ornaments out of the paper.

Cheers!

A FLOCK OF BRIEGER BIRDS

Really these were just too amazing to keep quiet about, and I’m not talking about a bad 80′s band.

Mike Brieger, a local metal smith & artisan, has outdone himself again. Lucky us! We now have 4 of his amazing steel birds keeping us company all day at the office.

They are nothing short of art. They are filled with motion and energy. Each has its own personality. And oh yeah, they do successfully hold back our 50 lb curtains too. Thank you Mike.

Mike is a master at crafting creatures from steel, whether it be birds, fantasy florals or boats. There is no limit to his imagination. You can get your own by calling Mike at 970.769.0682

ZUBERFIZZ HAS A NEW 8 PACK

It snowed here in Durango today. Actually it dumped. And while I do love winter frolicking, I move into the season like a reluctant cat being pushed out the door in the morning. So, when the new mixed 8-pack gift boxes for Zuberfizz showed up this week, I did what any slightly depressed cold blooded person would do- I cracked open a bottle and welcomed the fizzy happy feeling. Its cheaper than anti-depressants and the bubbles do warm you up!

Zuberfizz is out the door this season with a brand spanking new, mixed soda, gift box, at the request of Cost Plus World Market. They have discovered our little Soda Company and want a piece of it. Who wouldn’t? The box features fantastic images of historic Durango. It seemed to snow more back then.

The Animas Museum, here in Durango has an incredible collection of our slice of history and I encourage anybody within range of Durango to pay it a visit.    www.animasmuseum.org

The 8-Packs can be found on the shelves on Cost Plus World Market sometime later this winter. They didn’t quite make it in time for the holiday season, but bring in the New Year cheer with some fantastic soda or buy a few for your friends.    www.worldmarket.com
